Pet Containment 101

The following is an overview of electronic computerized pet containment such as Invisible Fence® Brand, DogWatch, Dog Guard, PetStop, Petsafe, and others. To determine if this type containment system is best for you simply ask yourself this: "Do I want a fence to keep my pet in or is there some other reason? Wired

These systems utilize wire that attaches to the transmitter and is buried, strung, or laid around a perimeter and returning to the transmitter. There are many ways to install the wire to allow for pets to have freedom to roam all around the yard but be exempted from such areas as flower beds, child's play areas, pools, water features and so on. A competent installer can accomplish almost anything including dividing the back yard from the front yard and crossing hard surface such as cement or asphalt. This wire serves as an antenna to carry a signal around the perimeter.

Once the system is installed the pet is fitted with a small computerized receiver collar. This receiver will pickup the signal when the dog enter the zone or approaches the wire. The collars will then provide a warning beep and/or in some cases a vibration and then administer a small static shock. Through proper training the pet becomes conditioned or trained to respond to the system by retreating back into the safe area and avoiding the zone.

The zone distance as well as the strength of the correction are adjusted to provide your pet with safe effective containment keeping it in or out of the areas your define.

The wired systems are the most effective and safest for the pets as you can easily define shape and size as well as eliminate false signals that can cause the dog to be shocked inadvertently.

Wireless

While this type of pet containment system includes both a transmitter and receiver it doesn't require wire to define the territory. The transmitter puts out a circular zone and the pets receiver collars activates when it leaves the zone. Because these systems activate when the receiver quits receiving the signal they will shock your pet whenever anything interferes with signal reception. In many cases your dog will get inadvertently shocked and become very confused. This fact along with the limited application of nothing more than a circular zone does not make them very applicable except as temporary or portable containment when camping or traveling. We do not recommend or sell these units except as a portable system.
